The City of Spruce Grove is undertaking a multi-year revitalization project for one of our most loved and well-used spaces - Central Park.

Central Park is located in the heart of the city and has long been a popular spot for community gatherings, special events, recreation, and play. Re-imagined Central Park is the roadmap which will guide the revitalization and enhancement of this space. The objectives of Re-imagined Central Park include:

  • Improving the park experience for users of all ages, interests and abilities.
  • Making the park safer and more comfortable for users during all seasons.
  • Enhancing the amenities and adding new amenities to accommodate a wide variety of uses including special programs and events.
  • Retaining the key features that make Central Park what it is today: skating oval, Lions Log Cabin, splash pad, stage/plaza.
  • Representing the rich history of the area and the uniqueness of its surroundings.

The new proposed amenities for the park were selected based on community needs outlined in the Outdoor Amenity Functional Plan (2018). The plan was developed through a robust stakeholder and public engagement process conducted in 2017 to create a vision for parks and outdoor spaces in Spruce Grove. Data collected during the engagement process led to the development of three areas of priority:

Priority 1: Wheeled Sports Facilities

A large-scale and contemporary wheeled sports facility including a skatepark, pump track, and mountain bike skills park.

Priority 2: Central Gathering Space (picnic and play area)

Development of amenities that will encourage multiple uses of the park by a wide range of visitors. The goal is to increase activity and sense of community ownership of the park by providing opportunities for play, gathering, picnicking, and people watching. This additional activity provides greater levels of passive surveillance of the site which will help to limit anti-social or criminal behaviour.

Priority 3: Entry Walk and Story Wall

Development of elements that provide recognizable moments of arrival to the park, improve access from the surrounding road and trail networks, and make circulation through the park more intuitive and accessible. Additionally, telling the story of the park’s ecology, history, and value to the community is important. Architectural and interpretive features also act as wayfinding devices to help users navigate the space.

A major milestone on site this week as concrete installation began on the future wheeled sports park and skate park.

Mayor Jeff Acker and members of City Council stopped by to check on the progress as crews sprayed shotcrete (a method of applying concrete projected at high velocity to a vertical or overhead surface) to begin forming the skate park bowl and wheeled sports park.

Work will continue until the snow flies, then the site will be winterized and construction paused until next spring.

Spruce Grove City Council reaffirmed its commitment to building an inclusive community by investing additional funding for the Re-imagined Central Park revitalization project. The funds, which were approved during the April 22 Regular Council meeting, will be used to purchase and install additional accessible play features and elements, as well as provide potable water access for water bottle fill stations, enhanced lighting, and security monitoring equipment.

“Removing barriers and enhancing accessibility and safety for our residents is a top priority for this council,” said Mayor Jeff Acker. “We want to ensure that those who want to access our facilities, programs, and recreational spaces feel welcome, safe, and able to participate with their friends and family. These additional enhancements at Central Park will go a long way in making that happen.”

The additional investment in the project was funded from the City’s reserves. Construction is set to begin in early May.
