    Hi Neighbours,

The Spruce Grove Neighbour Network started in January 2019 – prior to COVID-19. In March we had to move to a full virtual model. In the two years we have been online, there has been limited engagement on the Connect Spruce Grove platform. At this point, we have decided to discontinue the monthly posts and discussion on the Connect Spruce Grove platform.

We are still focused on helping neighbours create connections and are still offering the Block Party Program this year. If you have other ideas of how we can support neighbours creating connections on their block, please reach out to me.

    Take care,

    Karyn Hurlbut

I have taken some time to reflect on 2021 and develop some intentions for 2022. In terms of the Neighbour Network, I have been thinking about how to encourage more people to join us…and to have more of a conversation on the Connect Spruce Grove platform. I know we are still missing the in person piece of the puzzle but hopefully in 2022 we will be able to gather together to chat about neighbouring.

So my hopes for 2022 include:

    • Having at least one in person gathering of the Neighbour Network
    • To launch and have a really great block party program
    • To learn more about neighbouring supports that would help create connections in Spruce Grove

With that being said – what is your intention or hope around neighbouring in 2022? Do you want to host a block party? Do you want to meet any new neighbours that move in? Do you want to start a walking group with your neighbours? These are just some ideas I have – I want to hear from you!

I know we don’t want to say the dreaded “S” word just yet but it is November and it will come at some point this winter. I am curious - do the people on your block help each other with snow clearing? What does your block look like when you get a dump of snow?

I used to live on a block where there were three households that would try to go out and shovel and snow blow at the same time so we could have a visit too. If one person wasn’t there, the other two neighbours would clear their walk as well. I would love to hear about what happens on your block.

Halloween is such a great holiday to get to know your neighbours. The focus is on the kids but trick or treating can be a great way to start a conversation with your neighbours.

Is there anything you do to try to get to know people on your block and in your neighbourhood on Halloween? Do you intentionally trick or treat at houses on your block first? Maybe you know your neighbours well enough to go out trick or treating as a group.

Please share your ideas so others can think about how they want to connect on their block this Halloween!

This month, I would like to talk about inclusion. Our neighbourhoods and blocks are diverse in many ways. This includes cultural diversity, gender diversity, and age diversity just to name a few.

So I am wondering what are your ideas on how to help everyone feel welcome and included at your gatherings or parties?

This month we teamed up with Caitlin in the Environment Department!

There are lots of things you can do on your block to help the environment. For example, you could leave your lawn clippings on your lawn, or only water your gardens in the morning or evening. Another idea that has been used in many communities is sharing tools or lawn mowers. There are even Tool Libraries popping up in communities. Maybe you only use compostable materials when you have your block party or pick up litter when you are out for a walk. All of these things contribute to a healthier environment that is better for our entire community.

I am curious if you have talked to your neighbours about the environment or some of the ideas mentioned above?

What do you do to help make a healthier environment for your community?

Do you have any questions about environmental practices on your block that Caitlin from the Environment Department could help answer?

Block parties are a great way to get to know your neighbours. The Block Party Program runs from June 1 – August 31, 2021. Although they may look different this year, it is so great that the City can support this opportunity to foster neighbourhood connections.

Each registered block party will receive:

    • $100 grocery voucher from Save-On Foods
    • Antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizer, donated by Save-On Foods
    • The first 30 registrations will receive a lawn game that can be played safely while distancing

The maximum amount of people for a block party will be determined by the public health measures at the time of the party. Remember to follow all provincial health guidelines and help prevent the spread of COVID-19

Tell your neighbours and register your block party today!

Our kids and young people play a vital role on our blocks and in our communities and have enthusiasm and skills to share. How are the kids on your block connecting? Are they playing games? Do they have relationships/friendships on the block? Are they involved in planning the block party?
